Wind your way through the jungle to the ancient city of Palenque by local bus where you'll find one of the finest collections of Mayan architecture and carvings in existence. Palenque is situated on a hilltop in an area of hot jungle and is home to possibly the most impressive series of Mayan ruins, which date back at AD600. Whilst walking amongst the ruins it is often possible to hear the eerie calls of howler monkeys echoing from the jungle, giving an added dimension to this magnificent site. The temples are superb relics of Mayan culture and there are many ruins here still unexcavated and hidden in the surrounding forest.

Please note:The local Zapatista movement in the region around Palenque has been quite active in recent months, occasionally holding protests or blocking roads. Our local operations team is constantly monitoring this situation to ensure the safety of our passengers and leaders. In some cases, we might need to use an alternative route from San Cristobal to Palenque to avoid this activity – more so to bypass long traffic delays than any real danger.

After a long bus journey (approx. 8 hours) arrive in Merida. Leave the jungles behind as you explore the museums, galleries and cathedrals of Merida, the capital city of Yucatan. This is a great chance to collect your thoughts amongst the markets and mansions of this cultural hub. If you're still hankering for more Mayan ruins then the site of Uxmal is easily within reach. Fancy slipping on your dancing shoes? You won't be disappointed! Showing off your snazzy salsa steps is the perfect way to finish off the weekend. As streets close and turn into buzzing dance floors, you may not be able to stop yourself from joining in. Watch out Strictly! For spectacular sites of the feathered variety head to the pink flamingos of Celestun Bird Sanctuary, which always proves to be a highlight on this stretch of your Mexican adventure.

REAL Mexico

Amazing trip to Mexico. If you're looking to get to learn the history and culture of Mexico then this trek is for you! As we travelled through Mexico we experienced amazing archaeological sites and the way the Mayans, Aztec's and many other Mexican cultures used to live. The Markets cannot be missed for some good food and Mexican memorabilia and the tour guide we had was outstanding. I didn't really know what to expect with this as it is my first trek but it certainly exceeded any expectations I did have.

I had a great time. All of our hotels were great but I do know that a lot of people had trouble with our first hotel in Mexico City. The places we visited were beautiful and I really loved Puebla.

We offer a whole range of travel extras with everything from additional hotel nights, travel insurance, city sightseeing and more so you can organise everything you'll need for your trip in one easy place.

Our tours depart and finish at designated hotels in our gateway cities, so it's a great idea to book a room for the night before and after your tour. It's also worth staying extra nights to explore the city more. You must book these hotels in advance either online with your tour or by contacting our friendly sales team.

Marsella 28 Col. Juarez Del. Cuauhtemoc, Zona Rosa, 06600 Mexico City

This relaxed hotel is a 6-minute walk from a metro station, 18 minutes' walk from the Angel of Independence statue, and 2 km from the Centro Histórico. Warmly decorated, Colonial-style rooms offer free Wi-Fi and cable TV. Some have private terraces, living areas and/or sleep up to 4 people. Room service is available.

The easiest way to get from the airport to your hotel is by taxi. On your left as you exit customs you will find 'Transporte Terrestre" - you need to purchase your ticket from the named "Sitio 300". Rates are fixed and a ride to your hotel should cost you approximately US$15. You should avoid taking taxis from outside the airport.

Our BOLT tours depart and finish at designated hotels in our gateway cities starting with a pre-departure meeting at 18.00 on the evening of day 1 (check your tour voucher for details) and finishing in the morning of your final day. If you would like to do some extra sightseeing we can request the extra nights for you in our hotels. You must book these hotels in advance either online with your tour or by contacting our friendly sales team

If you have pre-booked a transfer with TrekAmerica (enquire at time of booking); you will be met after exiting the terminal building to the outside. As you exit please look for a sign with your name on it. There is no designated area for transfer drivers to wait inside the building so please take your time to look around once outside.

If you have any problems and cannot locate your driver on arrival, please call our Emergency number listed on the Trek Tips document. If you don’t have a device or mobile coverage, Cancun Airport has a free Wi-Fi connection so you can call that same number via an online application such as Skype. There are also several information desks and tourist information desks around if you require further assistance.

Alternatively, you can travel from the Cancun Airport to the hotel by taxi. We recommend you use the authorised taxi services organised from inside the terminal. They will charge you approximately MX$1100-1250 (USD$60-70) for a trip to Playa del Carmen. Or, from inside the terminal building you can organise to take a shuttle bus for approximately MX$500 (USD$30). The drive to Playa del Carmen where the hotel is located is approximately 50-60 minutes depending on traffic.

There are no forced supplements for single travellers. Accommodation for our BOLT tours is based on twin-share, so if you're travelling on your own, you'll share with a fellow passenger of the same sex. Simply select the "Solo Sleepers" checkbox on the booking form or request over the phone.
