What to do with your extra day?

So, you’re coming to the end of your trek. You’ve spent somewhere between 3 days and 3 months on the road with some brand-new faces who have become closer than family. You don’t want to go home.  Every trekker has found themselves in this classic quandary.

Do you slog your way to the departures gate, or do you rally the troops and book one last blowout at your departure city? We already know what you’re gonna say, so we’ve put together a list of our favourite departure cities and how you can make the most of your final days there!

Miami

Actually, blowouts are for suckers, you’re all pretty tired. Why not spend your last day together relaxing on one of the most famous beaches in the world?  When it comes to letting loose, it doesn’t get better than Miami!

There’s no better way to make some lasting memories together than a beach day, and we know how we’d spend it. Taking photos with all the different vibrantly coloured lifeguard huts, chasing seagulls away from hard earned snacks and playing volleyball as the sun sets…. Or you could just kick back in the sand and sun yourselves in the gorgeous heat. You’ll definitely be missing it once you get home!

After two weeks on our Atlantic Dream Plus, you’ll appreciate some quality beach time!

San Francisco

Whether you jump on the ferry first thing or spook yourself out on a night-time tour, this is the ONLY time we’d advise getting locked up on Trek. Walk in the footsteps of famous felons including Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly (not the one you’re thinking of) and get a taste of solitary confinement at the one and only Alcatraz Penitentiary. Looming over the San Francisco Bay, this infamous maximum-security prison held some of the most notorious criminals of its time.

On a captivating guided tour, you’ll hear thrilling tales of escape attempts and get an insight into the daily life of an Alcatraz inmate. Narrated by former prisoners and guards, you’ll find yourself immersed in what went on behind bars in the 29 years Alcatraz was operational. Just make sure you’re back on the ferry before those doors slam shut for the night…

End your Western Wonder with a day out on Alcatraz Island!

Vancouver

If you’re looking to make the most of your final day in Vancouver, get ready to be spoilt for choice. Whether you want to enjoy picturesque views on the Capilano Suspension Bridge or if you just want to eat your way through the indie paradise of Gastown, you can’t go wrong. But with so much choice, where should you go?

If we were you, we’d head straight to Stanley Park. You can start your day off by with a visit to Canada’s largest aquarium. After all, what better way to come to terms with your journey’s end than with a long hang out sesh with your favourite watery friends? Once you’re good and jealous, put your swimsuit on and head to the pool, from there on, you can plan out your perfect day at the park. If you’re worried about how to cram everything in, remember that you can always make use of the Stanley Park train!

Get some serious Vancouver time in on our Glaciers and Grizzlies Plus tour – which starts AND ends there!

New York

Wrapping up the list with our most common departure city, New York is the ultimate way to spend your extra day. Although your leader won’t be with you anymore, you can be sure that The Big Apple will become an unofficial TrekAmerica free day.  There’s so much to do and so much to see that we honestly had trouble nailing down the perfect way to use your extra day, but we think we managed it.

With your flight home just over the horizon, why not stretch your legs with the ultimate walking tour of NYC? Gather your group and see it all: Times Square, the Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Center… the list goes on and on. With so much to see, it’s all about prioritising your favourites and planning the perfect places to stop for food. This departure city is packed with potential.
