The Best Hikes in the Western States (whatever your hiking ability!)

It’s no secret by now, we LOVE National Parks. And the USA has more than its fair share. Whether you’re an expert hiker or prefer a gentle stroll, we’ve got the perfect trails for you to enjoy the incredible National Parks of America’s West – whatever your fitness level or ability.

The Rim Trail, Grand Canyon

Not a hiker? Not to worry – despite us having ‘Trek’ in the name, we won’t be expecting you to haul yourself halfway up a mountain before breakfast. The Grand Canyon is somewhere you can enjoy from all angles – and the canyon’s Rim Trail is a flat, easy stroll – paired with some seriously epic canyon views.

If you get caught up in the moment and want to take some steps into the Grand Canyon (just to say you did it!), you can always head a little way down the Bright Angel Trail, as the first section is pretty manageable even for the most nervous of hikers.

Delicate Arch, Arches National Park

Looking for a not-too-taxing hike that has the payoff of seeing one of the desert Southwest’s most iconic sights? Delicate Arch is THE emblem of Arches National Park, and it’s not until you get up close that you can truly appreciate its impressive scale.

The hike to Delicate Arch takes you up a wide rock bed, along some easy sandy trails, and finally along a short, relatively gentle incline to the arch’s viewpoint. Make sure you shuffle around to get a photo underneath it!

Mist Trail, Yosemite National Park

Yosemite has a whole load of incredible nature to get lost in, but its waterfalls are a true highlight. Pack in two for the price of one on the Mist Trail, the park’s signature hike. Your first big view takes in Vernal Fall as you climb the stone steps beside it, getting close enough to feel the spray on your face.

At the top of Vernal Falls, you can simply revel in your efforts, or continue on to the top of Nevada Fall, where the views showcase Yosemite at its beautiful best.

Angel’s Landing, Zion National Park

Starting out on solid ground, you’ll make your way up from the Virgin River to ‘Refrigerator Canyon’ – one of the few shady spots on this exposed trail. Next up, a solid workout for those hamstrings comes in the form of Walter’s Wiggles - a series of 21 short, steep switchbacks.

Hitting Scout’s Lookout, you’ll soak up some pretty amazing views of Zion – but the fun’s not over yet! The last section of the trail is only half a mile in length, but this final push involves hauling yourself up steep rocks and scrambling along narrow pathways. Grab those chains tight! It’s all worth it when you reach the summit and feel truly on top of the world!

Plateau Point, Grand Canyon

Wanna push yourself on your Trek trip? Plateau Point is the Grand Canyon hike to tick off. Particularly tough because you’re going down first before hiking upward. So, every step into the canyon means another step back up!

It’s a 12mile round trip, and gets pretty hot with limited shade, so the earlier you start, the better. In return for your efforts, you’ll get to take in some of the best views of the Grand Canyon’s dramatic landscape and the finest inner canyon viewpoints in the park.

Whenever you’re hiking, make sure you take plenty of water, sunscreen and energy-boosting snacks. Don’t hike alone – it’s way more fun with your Trek squad anyway!
