Kick-start your Alaskan adventure in the quaint and quirky town of Homer, at the head of Kachemak Bay on the Kenai Peninsula. Surrounded by wilderness and ocean, Homer is known as ‘the cosmic hamlet by the sea' and is a picturesque town with a bustling harbour and dramatic surrounding scenery. This is the perfect place for kayaking or a spot of sea fishing for halibut (permit purchased locally). Homer is also renowned for its bear viewing opportunities, so take your chance to join a full day bear viewing tour and create some really special memories.
The coastal town of Seward awaits your arrival and if it's stunning mountain scenery you're after, then you're in the right place! With picturesque views of the bay, and a superb location close to Kenai Fjords National Park, Seward offers both land-based and marine wildlife as well as a wonderful selection of tours, cruises and activities. Seward is home to the Harding Icefield, one of the largest in the USA. For a truly epic day, hike the Harding Icefield Trail, or get out on the water on a cruise to Kenai Fjords where you can spot Orcas, porpoises and sea otters, and hear glaciers calve huge chunks of ice into the sea with an ear-splitting crack!
Head north and stop at Talkeetna for the chance to try some reindeer sausage, a local delicacy, before arriving at awe-inspiring Denali National Park with its endless views and hiking opportunities. Your included scenic bus pass will help you explore, but the Denali rangers encourage visitors to get off the beaten track, and you'll soon feel like a real explorer as you head out into this vast wilderness. Daylight is well and truly on your side in Alaska as summer puts in so many overtime hours this far north, giving you more time to explore this wild wonderland. Try and spot the Alaskan ‘Big Five’: caribou, wolves, Dall Sheep, moose and Grizzly Bear, as you hike in the shadows of Mount Denali, which is usually translated as 'The Great One'. It's North America's highest mountain, standing at an incredible 6,190m (20,320 ft)! If budget allows, opt for a once in a lifetime scenic flight over Mount Denali, the views are simply breathtaking.
Today you drive along the Denali Highway to the Tangle Lakes. The Tangles Lakes are a picture-perfect place to pitch your tent and spend the night. Rent a canoe and head out on the lake to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, with snow-capped mountains as your backdrop.
The scenery just keeps on getting better and better as you take the scenic road along the Alaska Mountain Range towards America's largest national park - Wrangell-St Elias. It's home to many of America's highest peaks and largest glaciers - including a glacier that's bigger than the state of Rhode Island. The next couple of days are going to be pretty epic. Untended trails, unpaved roads and unending views are exactly what you signed up for! Wilderness camping amongst this scenery is definitely a real highlight. As the Wrangell Mountains cast their lengthy shadow, ready yourself for some top-notch glacier action. How about a guided hike on the Kennecott Glacier? Or for a more vertical challenge, grab an axe for a spot of ice climbing on Root Glacier.
Finally, with pockets full of postcards and memories, you're back from the wilderness and it's time to return to civilisation. Anchorage is a city that has it all, with heaps of local walking trails, shops aplenty and a great bar and restaurant scene. We suggest staying a few extra nights after the tour to explore.
This tour ends at our gateway hotel at approximately 17:00 hrs. We can book you post-tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00 hrs.
Our tours usually depart at 07:30am and finish around 5:00pm at designated hotels in our gateway cities, so it's a great idea to book a room for the night before and after your tour. It's also worth staying extra nights to explore the city more. You must book these hotels in advance either online with your tour or by contacting our friendly sales team.
