Tour Itinerary

As this tour departs at 0730 we recommend that you book pre-tour accommodation. Please request hotel details at the time of booking.

  • Day 1-2: Los Angeles & San Diego

This morning we take in some of LA's top sites including a visit to Hollywood Boulevard to hit the Walk of Fame and photo stop of the famous Hollywood sign. Then leaving LA we follow the coast south to California's answer to winter weather, "always temperate" San Diego. A perfect climate, great zoo and heaps of Spanish charm. Unleash some long-lost skating moves then rub shoulders with the surf set in laid-back beach haunts. It's easy to agree with the locals who call their home "America's Finest City". If you're not too tired at the end of the evening why not hit the clubs and bars which start pumping as the sun sets.
    Accommodation: Camping included

  • Day 3: Salvation Mountain & Colorado River

Any road trip worth its salt needs highways stretching to the cactus-studded horizon, so expect quality bonding backdrops as California turns to sun-drenched Arizona and forest turns to desert. En route we visit the colourful desert monument of Salvation Mountain which featured in the film `Into the Wild', where you have the chance to follow the yellow brick road to the top. We stop to admire views of the rolling sand dunes before finishing the day at our camp by the Colorado River, and if can brave the cold, a chance to swim.
    Accommodation: Camping included

  • Day 4: Betty & Rusty's Wild West Cowboy Camp

This morning you have the option for a cool but epic swim in the mighty Colorado River before heading further into Arizona for a night at our authentic Cowboy Camp to do the Old West thing. Saguaro cacti cast familiar shapes across the Sonora Desert brush with coyotes, hawks, and star-filled skies for company. Your hosts Betty & Rusty will cook you a cowboy steak dinner you won't forget and you can climb high atop one of their trusty horses for a ride under the desert sky. Tonight, prepare for a campfire party and be as loud as you like - Betty and Rusty don't have any neighbours for miles!
    Accommodation: Camping included

  • Day 5: Monument Valley

Monument Valley, a land of classic western scenery, is the Navajo Nation's greatest natural treasure and also the most photographed place in all of America. For a very different experience we include a jeep tour of Monument Valley's back roads with a local Navajo guide and overnight in a traditional Hogan under a blanket of stars. A Hogan is a traditional clay and wood Navajo dwelling; and after touring this wondrous natural movie set with our Navajo guide, there's no better place to lay your head. This is a rare experience which helps you delve beneath the surface on such a well-worn path.
    Accommodation: Traditional hogan stay

  • Day 6-7: Grand Canyon National Park

Just when the scenery seems unbeatable, journey to the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. With two days you have more than enough time to hike the rim trails for those incredible views looking down into the vast desert canyons, as well as the chance to hike down the snaking trails revealing a very different side, and one only 5% of visitors see who don't venture past the rim. Why not opt for a flight over the Grand Canyon for bird's eye views! The best bit? Perhaps awaking to the most stunning sunrise nature can summon as the rocks change colour in celebration of a new day.
Accommodation: 2 en-route hotel nights included

  • Day 8-9: Las Vegas

On to an incredible man-made wonder in the desert - Las Vegas - "The City That Never Sleeps". En route we travel a section of the original Route 66, stopping at the town of Seligman which has stood still in time and filled to the brim with Americana. Remember the saying "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas", well with so much leftfield stuff found in Sin City, you may need to update your Facebook status! Caesars Palace mall attendants in full centurion garb; a mock volcano erupting through the evening and newly-weds partying on The Strip and on Fremont Street downtown.. Its brash, it's bizarre, it's brilliant! Catch a show, ride a roller coaster and enjoy its famous bright lights, casino gambling and non-stop nightlife.
Accommodation: 2 en-route hotel nights included

  • Day 10: Death Valley National Park

Our desert experience is completed by the perfect winter destination: Death Valley National Park. The blistering summer heat is no more, so your camera will lap up sights like Artist's Palette, a giant egg-box of turquoise, orange and red mineral deposits, Zabriskie Point, and the immense perspectives of Dante's View, a perfect view indeed!
    Accommodation: Camping included

  • Day 11-12: Yosemite National Park

Prepare to be wowed. Thundering waterfalls, huge granite cliffs shaped by the elements and towering sequoia trees are all perfect camera fodder within this huge wilderness. We have two days to hike, snow shoe, and explore this incredible national park decorated under a blanket of snow. You may opt to rest your bones in the hostel sauna and hot tub after a hard days exploring.
Accommodation: Hostel on a twin share basis, included

  • Day 13: San Francisco

Today we make our way to the final destination on this epic 13 day tour, finishing in the City by the Bay, San Francisco, famous as having inspired a nation of hippies and created some of the best music during the 60's and 70's. Today locals are still fiercely proud of their city, crowned by the Golden Gate Bridge which you have the chance to walk across on an included tour. Following this we visit the famed Haight-Ashbury to explore the eclectic shops before your road trip comes to an end. What a bag full or memories to pack up and take home.

This tour ends at our gateway hotel at approximately 17:00 hrs. We can book you post-tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00 hrs.
