Day 1: Los Angeles & Santa Barbara
Experience Hollywood Boulevard close-up with a brief tour of this legendary area, before heading west for the first of two nights on the coast, first at Santa Barbara, a "gem of a coastal city" with a decidedly Spanish flair. Slap on the sunscreen to flaunt your tan and volleyball skills.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 2: Big Sur
With each passing mile on California's most famous road - Pacific Coast Highway 1 - the shore grows yet more spectacular, as Redwood forested mountains lean down towards beautiful sandy beaches and the pounding Pacific swell. Pitch tents by crashing surf then cosy up round the campfire under Californian stars.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 3-4: Yosemite National Park
The Sierra Nevada mountains beckon with the towering peaks of Yosemite National Park. We have two days to hike, bike, or float through this extraordinary landscape of glacier-carved granite monoliths, spectacular waterfalls and groves of giant Sequoia trees - the largest living things on earth! If you want a real challenge, try the 17 mile round trip hike to the top of Half Dome!
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 5-6: San Francisco
Next, "Everybody's Favourite City", San Francisco. This town will blow you away. Sunlight on the bay, wispy fog around Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars climbing steep streets: it's a 24-carat stunner. After we view the Bay and Alcatraz on our included sunset sailboat cruise, the party people flock to trendy bars and clubs in North Beach or Haight-Ashbury and that friendly vibe gets even better.
Accommodation: 2 en-route hotel nights paid locally
-
Day 7-8: Redwood National Park
Making our way up the California Coast, we pass though small quaint coastal towns en route to Redwoods National Park, home of the tallest trees in the world and some of the most spectacular coastal scenery on the Pacific Coast. Leave footprints on what is virtually your own private Pacific beach or traipse between gigantic Redwoods, feeling like ants in their mighty shadow.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 9-10: Oregon Coast & Mt St Helens
Keep that camera handy for the perfect photo, as you drive along the Oregon coast. Through Portland, head to the Cascades for an up-close look at one of nature's volcanic wonders - Mt. St. Helens National Monument. The awesome explosion of 1980 forever altered its alpine splendour, but the partially destroyed mountain is now even more impressive. View the film that captured the actual eruption, and view Spirit Lake nestled below the still smouldering crater.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 11: Mount Rainier National Park
Journey into the heart of the Cascade Mountains to Mount Rainier National Park, the Range's head honcho and its hiking trails sure live up to the hype. There are over 300 miles of hiking trails available in this park, everything from easy walks through the forests to heart pounding climbs up to the mountain's glaciers.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 12-13: Olympic National Park
Get ready to roll out for a blast of fresh-air adventure amidst dense rainforest and ancient glaciers. Washington's jewel, Olympic National Park, offers a wide range of vistas including glaciated snowy peaks, spectacular coastal beaches and an ancient rain forest to explore and enjoy. If sore feet deserve a little TLC, let Sol Duc Hot Springs do the honours. Soak it up! This is the life.
Accommodation: Camping included.
-
Day 14: Seattle
Leaving the mountains of the Olympic Peninsula behind we journey across Puget Sound aboard the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle. Then be whisked 500 feet up the Space Needle (optional). By the way, the elevator's glass, so be prepared for some amazing views! Then tonight blare out guitar-loaded classics in the city that gave the world Hendrix and Nirvana.
Accommodation: Hotel night included
-
Day 15: Montana
From Seattle we cross Washington through Idaho's Bitterroot Range into Big Sky Country. Montana welcomes us with rugged mountain peaks, natural hot springs and wide open spaces.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 16-17: Yellowstone National Park
Enjoy a night under a brilliant blanket of stars in the American Rockies, before reaching Yellowstone National Park for a glorious two night stay. When Old Faithful goes
off, it really goes high! View the explosive geysers and colourful waterfalls while exploring the world's oldest and most famous national park. Keep your eyes peeled for the abundant wildlife. Bison, bear, moose and elk roam the park - best be quick on the draw with your camera.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 18-19: Grand Teton National Park & Jackson
Next, wonderful views and hikes await in the majestic Grand Teton National Park. With few foothills to speak of, the jagged peaks here rise like teeth from lush, flat meadows against bright blue sky. Next we visit the truly western town of Jackson, Wyoming. Rafting the raging Snake River rapids, one of America's last great untamed rivers, will definitely get your adrenaline pumping; as might a shot of 'Red-Eye' Whiskey at the Silver Dollar Saloon.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 20-22: Flaming Gorge & Arches National Park
Winding through the cliffs of Flaming Gorge, take it easy on the Green River. Settle in for some scenic vistas and red rocks that look out of this world! Journey to America's Mecca for mountain biking enthusiasts - Moab, Utah. This is the perfect base for two days of exploration and adventure in the nearby Arches National Park. Endless opportunity awaits; take a sunset stroll to Delicate Arch, mountain bike down the famous `Slick Rock Trail´ or tackle the terrain high above on an extreme guided Hummer tour.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 23: Monument Valley
You'll be left wide eyed as we head to the Navajo Tribal Lands of Monument Valley. The only things to pre-date the origins of Native American culture are the towering buttes and mesas which dominate the awe-inspiring landscape. Sacred to the Navajo people and beloved by movie directors, you'll be smitten too, especially with an optional Navajo Indian guided 4x4 tour into the Valley.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 24-25: Grand Canyon National Park
Next stop is Grand Canyon National Park, with a full day to experience the grandeur of Earth's natural wonder. Hiking this jaw-dropping terrain of striped limestone and sandstone, you might spot red-tailed hawk or majestic golden eagles. Whether you are up with the sun to start your long hike down Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point, take a leisurely walk around the rim or choose the "bird's eye" view on a scenic flight, you are sure to be left with feelings of awe and amazement.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 26: Zion National Park
Onwards to Zion National Park to swim and explore the hidden canyons or maybe even tackle the spectacular hike to Angels Landing. Okay, so getting up there can be devilish at times, but the famous trail puts on a 360-degree display of this magnificent national park.
Accommodation: Camping included
-
Day 27: Las Vegas
With a sudden burst of neon, Vegas is right in your face - the greatest show on earth! Cruise "The Strip" in a super-stretch limo, indulge in an all-you-can eat buffet, take in a show or just watch the amazing crowds and neon signs as the glitzy hotels try to out do each other with spectacular attractions. And if that's not enough, take a helicopter flight back down The Strip or just gamble the night away in one of the world class casinos.
Accommodation: 1 en-route hotel nights paid locally
