  • If you are looking for America holidays that offer variety, the opportunity to visit cosmopolitan cities and see some of the country's most spectacular natural attractions, your number one choice is likely to be to head west. The area is home to great cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas, along with the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park, allowing visitors to experience two very different sides to the USA during a two-week break.

There are few better places to begin a USA holiday than in Southern California - or SoCal as it is known to the famously cool locals. San Diego is home to some of the best beaches in the country, so before you begin exploring the region you can enjoy a couple of days of relaxation, or perhaps try your hand at surfing. The city also has some fun tourist attractions to visit, including SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

From there you can travel out into the less hospitable surroundings of the Mohave Desert on your way to Lake Havasu City. Here you will find the original London Bridge, which was purchased by businessman Robert McCulloch in 1968, shipped across the Atlantic and reconstructed over a canal.

Next stop on your tour of the West will be Grand Canyon National Park to see one of the world's great natural attractions. Formed by the Colorado River carving a path through the rugged Arizona landscape, the canyon is now 277 miles long and, in places, 18 miles wide and more than a mile deep.

The Grand Canyon and the surrounding wilderness are the perfect backdrop for outdoor pursuits, with hiking among the most popular. Walk to one of the observation points and you will have a great view over the rock formations and waterfalls in the canyon - sights that look even more spectacular at sunrise or sunset. America is a land of many different cultures and huge contrasts, as you will see when you depart the Grand Canyon for Las Vegas. The glitziest and most over-the-top city in the western world, Las Vegas is built for nothing other than fun. Try to win - or at least avoid losing - a fortune at the poker table in a casino resort, head to one of the many upmarket nightclubs or simply take a stroll down The Strip and you will soon understand why the place is also known as Sin City.

From Las Vegas you will travel out of Nevada and to one of the highlights of any California trips, Yosemite National Park. This vast expanse of wilderness is a dream destination for people on adventure holidays , as its combination of towering mountains, lush forests, lakes and rivers is perfect for hiking and camping. It is also a great destination for wildlife lovers, as its varied habitats are home to black bears, bobcats, cougars, mule deer, jack rabbits, mountain beavers and owls.

After spending a couple of days in Yosemite, your exploration of the West will be all about cities. First up is San Francisco, where you can do the traditional tourist thing and enjoy a trip on the cable cars, visit the notorious former prison on Alcatraz Island and stroll across Golden Gate Bridge. You are also sure to love San Francisco's nightlife, whether you choose to visit the trendy bars and clubs of North Beach or the more relaxed atmosphere of hippy hot spot Haight-Ashbury.

Stop in Santa Barbara for two days to enjoy the affluent city's beautiful beaches, historic attractions, nightlife and seafood restaurants and you should be feeling relaxed enough to tackle the final destination on your tour of the Western USA .

Los Angeles is one of the biggest and brashest cities in the country, but don't let that put you off, as there is lots to see and do. As it is the home of the film industry, many of the sights are linked to the movies and no trip to LA is complete without visiting the Hollywood sign, the Walk of Fame and Grauman's Chinese Theatre. If that leaves you eager to learn more about the film industry, you could visit Universal Studios or perhaps end your holiday with a little star-spotting in the infamous clubs and bars on Sunset Strip.
