Here, head to an observatory to catch a peek of the glowing lava, or hike the smoking trails through old lava tubes for an unreal experience.
Out on the water, jump on board a Zodiac boat for snorkelling in Kealakekua Bay Park and watch for turtles on the jet-black sands of Punalu’u Beach. Catch the sunset at Onomet Bay and spend nights oceanside near the likes of Laupahoehoe Beach and Spencer Park Beach, where you’ll be lulled to sleep by the sound of crashing waves.
Onomea Scenic Drive snakes through the lush tropical rainforest that covers the island, leading to the pick of the waterfalls, Akaka. Other falls include Rainbow Falls in Wailuku River State Park the nearby Boiling Pots.
You can also expect a big dose of culture. Pop into Waipio Valley for a locally-guided tour with a local or visit Lapakaahi State Park for a glimpse into Hawaiian life. Oh, and be sure to pop into Kona coffee farm to top up the caffeine levels – just in case the adrenaline isn’t pumping enough already!
