Mexico; a medley of ancient civilisations, tropical jungles and picture-perfect beaches – it’s pretty hard not to love this place!
A land of sombreros, tortillas, chilli and tequila; the people will charm you, the ancient history will amaze you and the warm Caribbean Sea will put you in a state of paradise. Mexican city life is vibrant and exciting. In Mexico City the old and the new clash, whilst the capital of the Yucatan, Mérida, is full to the brim with galleries, museums and cathedrals. On the coast, the walled city of Campeche is a colonial dreamland.
Mingle with the locals in the handicraft markets and pick up souvenirs for the folks back home in Puebla, before hiking up an epic volcano. Be sure to visit the highland valley of San Cristobal de las Casas to explore local villages by bike or trusty steed, at your own pace. Say “Mexico”, think beach. Cancun packs a party scene punch, whilst nearby Playa del Carmen’s dreamy beaches are bound to put some spice in your step. It’s also the perfect spot to hop on a boat and catch a glimpse of whale sharks (in season).
The laidback beach town of Mahahaul will have you moving to that mariachi beat with its authentic Mexican atmosphere whilst nearby Banco Chinchorro - an underwater paradise - will mesmerise. Other coastal hotspot’s include the jungle flanked ‘Lagoon of Seven Colours’ in Bacalar, where you can also explore one of Mexico’s famous cenotes, as well as Tulum, which typifies Mexico with its exciting fusion of ancient ruins and beach.
For more of Mexico’s ancient history head to world-famous Chichen Itza, then have yourself an Indiana Jones moment in Palenque’s ancient ruins which lay undiscovered in the steaming jungles for centuries. Not to be missed are the intricately carved temples found in hilltop Uxmal, one of the top Mayan archaeological sites and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Monte Alban. One thing’s for sure, a trip to Mexico will be action-packed!
