Sandwiched between the Pacific and Atlantic, eco-friendly Costa Rica is a wildlife lovers’ dream. Leave the urban jungle of San Jose behind, and you’ll discover a country bursting with awe-inspiring natural beauty. Top draws include La Fortuna, sitting at the foot of perfectly formed Arenal Volcano, and the lush cloud forests of Montverde. Here, you can take a guided canopy walk, explore by bike, get the adrenaline pumping on a zip line or hike yourself happy before relaxing in the hot springs. Take it back up a notch white water rafting down mountain gorges in Turrialba, trek up a volcano or tube down a 400 metre natural mountain water, slicing through the rainforest in the hidden paradise of Rincon de la Viega.
Manuel Antonio National Park is not to be missed, with its white sand beaches flanked by lush forest and wildlife-loaded mangrove swamps and lagoons. Meanwhile, the rainforest reserve in Tirimbina offers pristine forest to explore – including the one of the country’s longest hanging bridge that you can walk across… if you dare! For a small country Costa Rica squeezes in a lot, and that includes the wildlife. Home to over 260 types of animal and 850 species of birds; keep those eyes peeled as you explore! One of the most sought after, the striking Quetzal bird, is best spotted in the charming Talamanca Mountain Range.
The Tortuguero National Park, which brags over 20 miles of protected coastline, is another wildlife hotspot but for a totally different species; Green Turtles that nest on its beaches. For a remote experience, take a boat through the Tortuguero Canals, looking out for crocodiles and playful monkeys swinging in the surrounding trees, as well as Costa Rica’s most famous resident, the charismatic and strangely appealing sloth. And if it’s bizarre creatures you like, get to know the friendly bats in Sarapiqui – also the place to excite your sweet tooth with a chocolate tour!
Last but not least, the jewel in Costa Rica’s glimmering crown is its beaches, which are like something out of a movie scene. The underwater world comes alive in the warm Caribbean waters of Cahuita Marine National Park where you can snorkel the vibrant coral reef. Explore on foot, or take a surfing lesson against a backdrop of swaying palm trees. And for a taste of the Pacific, the appealing champagne coloured sands of Hermosa Beach, where you can horse ride on the beach, is yours to savour; it’s also the perfect spot to extend your beach time at the end of an action packed adventure!
