Take a short flight into ‘the white city’ of Merida. The Yucatan capital is a charming mix of old colonial buildings, churches and markets where live music and theatre dictates the evenings. A hop on, hop off bus is a great way to get around and uncover hidden gems from the city’s history. If you’re looking for something a bit different, take a horse-drawn carriage along the cobbled streets of El Centro and Pasaje Montejo Boulevard.

From a large human population to a large flamingo population, it’s possible to visit nearby Celestun to see the infamous birds and uncover the subterranean secrets of the Yucatan Peninsula with a dip in the local ‘cenote’. These circular freshwater lagoons prevalent throughout the region are the perfect way to cool off from the midday heat.

First up is a visit to the historical site of Chichen Itza and your first glimpse into the ancient Mayan world as a group. This included tour unearths sacred traditions at key sites, such as the ball court, where the winning team’s captain was beheaded, proving it doesn’t always pay well to be talented! You’ll also see the cenote for human sacrifices, which Mayan civilization believed was the gateway to the underworld. The real show stopper is the Pyramid of Kukulcan, where during the equinox the shadows of a large snake appear to move down the structure – creepy!

The beautiful Caribbean beaches of Cancun attract sun worshippers from all over, with many resorts taking pride of place. This vibrant party hub is the perfect place to enjoy a fruity cocktail and dance the night away in one of the lively clubs. Feeling adventurous? Swim with Whale Sharks on an optional snorkeling tour or scare your hangover off at the Xel-ha Theme Park.

Don your best swimming gear for deep-sea adventures, as Belize is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world. There are plenty of hot diving spots for qualified divers, including natural phenomenon the ‘Great Blue Hole’ with its eerie bottomless depths. Thrill seekers can continue their search for allusive marine life and join one of many snorkeling tours in the Hoi-Chan Marine Reserve. Explore Shark Ray Alley to spot Nurse Sharks as well as incredible coral clusters and exotic fish shoals. When you’re not discovering the delights of the Caribbean Sea, learn how to relax like a local and ‘go slow’, as instructed by street signs dotted about the island. Enjoy white sand beaches, visit a local BBQ or show the fishermen what you’re made of and catch your own dinner. You’ll begin to feel like a natural born islander in no time.

Explore sacred ruins and see the mounds of temples that are yet to be excavated with your local guide. Visit the most iconic of all, the Tikal temples, and a truly awe-inspiring sight, Temple of the Grand Jaguar.

Located in the heart of the jungle, Tikal offers up plenty of wildlife. Howler Monkeys and exotic birds such as Toucans watch protectively from the trees above while Wild Turkeys roam the grounds.
