10 of the coolest road trip stop-offs

  • Trek America Road Trip

When you think of a road trip through the USA, your mind will probably wander to that big ole' canyon in Arizona, the dazzling lights that sweep across Vegas and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in everyone's favourite city, San Francisco.

There is no doubt about it, the above places are great. But, what about those random places that you come across out of the blue? The places that your tour leader has known about since you set off, but has been keeping it a secret, knowing full well it will put a great big smile across your face as soon as you lay eyes on it.

With that in mind, we've chosen the top 10 amazing, fun and downright weird things you might just come across on one of our USA road trips!

1. A tree so big you can drive a Trek van through it in

In Redwood National Park, you'll find plenty of towering sequoias - and you won't even need to stop and get out of the van for this one!

2. A zombie head in a toilet

In Seligman, Arizona, you'll discover a whole host of Americana memorabilia - but we're not quite sure where this guy came from...

3. A replica of Stonehenge made from foam

And yep, of course - it's name is Foamhenge. It opened on April Fool's Day (seriously) in 2004 in Virginia. And it's pretty realistic looking, we think!

4. A gum-plastered wall in Seattle

It sounds disgusting, but looks pretty cool! An attraction that'll definitely 'stick' in your mind...

6. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve

We'd fly you to the moon and back if you joined us for a road trip, y'know. Well. Kinda...

7. Aliens?!

Trekkers heading through the Roswell area have reported strange sightings, circles in the sky and lost hours...although the latter might just be their Vegas hangover?

8. The Parthenon

Take a trip to Greece without leaving the Deep South...this Nashville attraction is a full-scale replica of the famous Athens temple.

9.  Cadillac Ranch

Is this the way to Amarillo? Sure is! Grab your graffiti can - it's time to get creative!
