When in Phadelphia, eh? Way more impressive than your standard Subway steak and cheese, the Philly Cheesesteak is a must-try for meat-eaters. Ask for Cheez Whiz sauce and make sure to load up on the peppers and onions. These are usually pretty huge – great for a day of filling up before seeing everything Philly has to offer!

Poutine is a popular Canadian 'fast food' style dish that's basically very much along the lines of North East England fave, chips and gravy. Cheese curds on top of crisp French fries, with brown gravy poured over the top. The ultimate Canadian comfort food!

Chances are you've had a taco before – but a truly authentic Mexican taco is a treat for your tastebuds! Have your tasty taco stuffed with whatever filling you desire – meat, fish, veg – with a plentiful sprinkling of cheese, you're good to go!

It's time to get deep. Deep dish, that is. Chicago is famous for it's very own style of pizza, with a deep, thick base – more like a topped pie than a pizza. If you're really going all out, indulge in a filled base – layers of dough, cheese and tomato. You'll never look at your local supermarket's thin crust offerings in the same way again...delicious!

Empanadas are made by folding pastry around a meat or cheese filling – beef and chicken are popular choices. Think along the lines of a more exotic Cornish pasty and you're just about there. Vegetarian? No worries! Bell peppers, potatoes, onions and broccoli are popular meat-free alternatives to wrap up in your empanada.

Sushi fan? Ceviche is pretty similar – raw seafood prepared with citrus juices and spiced with a kick of chilli. Traditionally, it's a lunchtime meal, ususally served up at room temperature with sides such as sweet potato or corn on the cob. And the Peruvians love it so much, there's a whole national day dedicated to the dish. So if you happen to rock up in the country around June 28th, you'll likely find yourself chowing down on a bowl.

Think you know ribs? You totally don't know ribs until you've had the US's best! Huge racks of meaty goodness smothered in smoky Memphis BBQ sauce, the messy eaters among you can rejoice as you'll be in good company. Go large, you won't regret it!

Hawaiian food is fresh, tasty and perfectly seasoned! Kālua is a traditional Hawaiian cooking method, using an imu – basically, a type of underground oven. Also great to try is ahi poke (a raw tuna salad) and lomi-lomi salmon, a fresh tomato and salmon salad. Order up a taster of all three with some rice for the ultimate Hawaiian tapas-style feast, best enjoyed on a beachside restaurant!

Rice and beans sound like a pretty basic dish you might whip up in your first term at Uni, but believe us, the Costa Ricans make it pretty special. On pretty much every menu, Costa Ricans wolf down this dish like crazy!

 

Jambalaya (New Orleans, US)

Creole and cajun cooking are both Louisiana specialities, and one of New Orleans' signature dishes is jambalaya. Traditional jambalaya includes smoked sausage along with another type of meat – seafood is a massively popular choice. Mixed in with rice, veg and spices, this dish is a true taste of Louisiana's hotpot of influences, with particular roots in Spanish and French cooking.
