Video: Skyscrapers and Sky Bridges – Hello Vancouver!

  • Totem Poles in Vancouver

A sunny day in Vancouver was a heck of a way to kick off our "Canadian Road Trip" trek, an epic journey across the entire continent, from the Pacific to the Atlantic. It's going to be a grand adventure! We all met up yesterday morning in Seattle for a quick briefing, then loaded up in our loyal van "Bessie the Brave," and we drove north into Canada.

It was an easy crossing of the border, the longest undefended international border in the world, and we had just enough time to take a quick scenic drive into the famous Stanley Park to see the totem poles, traditional craft of the Native Americans who once inhabited this whole region of the Pacific Northwest. We were inspired to mold ourselves into totem poles and take our first ridiculous group photo of the trip. I'm sure there will be many more to come.

Today was a beautiful warm sunny day in Vancouver, something that this city doesn't see all that often, since Vancouver actually gets double the amount of rainfall than the city of London. We were feeling grand as we drove back into the city this morning and began a full day of rollerblading and biking all over this incredibly cool city filled with skyscrapers, bohemian neighborhoods, one of the largest China towns outside of Asia, beach-side biking trails, and historic old shopping and restaurant districts.

Most of the group decided to go check out the Capilano Suspension Bridge, a famous local attraction that was built in 1889 and stretches over a deep river canyon 230 ft (70m) above a scenic clear water river. More than just the bridge, we spent a couple hours wandering through the entire area filled with tree-top suspension bridges high up in the canopy of the forest and cliff-side walkways that hang off the sheer edges of the canyon walls. A bald eagle circled overhead as we crossed the main bridge one last time on our way out of this fantastic wilderness escape hidden away in the mountains above Vancouver.

It's hard to pick a highlight from our adventure filled day in Vancouver. Circling Stanley Park on bicycles, watching sea otters play in the water, lunch at the market out on Granville Island, or just relaxing on the beach watching float planes circle overhead. If you're lucky enough to catch Vancouver on a sunny day, it's most definitely one of the coolest and most beautiful cities in North America. A great way to start our journey!
