Great American road trips from TrekAmerica

  • Great American road trips from TrekAmerica

A lot has changed in the USA since we launched our first ever tour way back in 1972. The internet has helped shrink the vast distances from east to west and north to south; the country has been led by its first black president; and the shocking events of 9/11 changed the face of air travel forever.

Even though the years have passed and the way we travel has changed our awesome Southern Sun tour has remained the same and is as popular as it was back then. Jeremy James is the guy we need to thank, he founded TrekAmerica and is responsible for the epic 21-day journey from New York to Los Angeles. The famous Route 66 might have been decommissioned in 1984, but people's desire and thirst for adventure hasn't stopped people hitting the road and experiencing everything the USA has to offer!

With all the new apps and technology we have at our finger tips we can now video chat someone in Los Angeles from New York and yes, you can fly from JFK to LAX in under six hours (pretty quick, eh?), but just think about all of the wonderful things you will miss out on in those 2,800 miles in between.

From bustling cities to picture-perfect national parks and the super friendly locals, there's a whole lot of America to see on the drive from east to west. Some are world-famous and unmissable, such as the Grand Canyon, one of Earth's natural wonders, while others are smaller and more quirky, but just as memorable, like Roswell's UFO Museum.

Mind blowing

As you travel across America, you'll contribute to some amazing facts and figures that are almost as mind boggling as the destinations themselves. You will no doubt sample a tasty burger, that will contribute to some of the 50 billion burgers consumed each year in the USA and will most definitely sup on a few cans of the 64 billion litres of soda used to wash them down!

America's mind boggling numbers don't just start and finish with food. The USA boasts some of the world's most amazing natural wonders: California is home to the world's tallest trees in Redwood National Park, the trees average 380ft in height, that's almost the same size as a 30 storey building. 2.2 million litres of water flow over the Horseshoe Falls, every single second. The falls makes up part of the impressive Niagara Falls. The aptly named Death Valley, often reaches scorching temperatures, the highest being 57C. I don't know about you, but that makes me start sweating at just the thought of it?

Action adventure

Of course, a road trip isn't just about looking and gawping, it's about getting out there and getting amongst it all – whether that's losing your shirt in Las Vegas, listening to blues music in New Orleans or sunbathing on the beach in Miami.

To celebrate these and the other diverse, wonderful, and at times wacky, experiences you can enjoy on a small group tour adventure in the USA, we've created 'The Great American Road Trip' infographic.

Hopefully the infographic will inspire you to venture out on an adventure of your own and help you decide which one of our fantastic holidays you want to be a part of, from our very first trip Southern Sun to our very latest expedition, The Great 48, an epic 80-day odyssey visiting all but two of the states in the USA. If time isn't on your side but you still want your very own adventure, our Westerner 2 and Best of the East are both two week trips that are just as epic and take in the best of the east and the west.

Whichever one you choose, you're in for one hell of a ride!
