So I've not long been back from my trek, and I have to tell you all I had the best time... all thanks to the good people I travelled with, but mainly due to the FANTASTIC GUIDE, CHRISTIAN TONG. (Who had to force me back home)
Our tour guide was so great at giving the group all the info possible on the activities. He also gave us all the info we needed on how to stay safe when we explored on our own, how to bargain with the locals, where to get the best currency deals and generally how to get the best out of our trek.
Christian Tong (AKA 'The Tonger / Gladiator') also taught us that the best places to eat are with the locals from the street spits... I ate it pretty much all the time and have to say he's right. Even if you're veggie, as I am, you have to try it.
This tour was definitely worth it - you don't have to worry about money as everything's so cheap - I only took £500 & I was in Cancun two days before and two days after the tour. You're always on the go, there's never a minute to get bored and if you have a guide like Christian Tong there will never be a dull moment... just watching him sing his heart out to his country music is the best and funniest entertainment you could wish for (sorry Tonger I love your singing really).... so many times I had to pick my sides up off the floor... and if you get the opportunity to see him after a beer... take an extra set of underwear, I promise you will be weeing yourself with laughter - especially if you get to see him get all the guys to do the 'double stuntman'. And Tonger, Steve, Fitz & Dave, that wasn't us girls cheering you on, it was us laughing at you guy's putting yourselves through pain... why would you do that??? I don't think it's 'cause it tickle's...
If you go on this trek, do remember to leave all your reservations at home, and give every activity your best shot, after all when will you next get to do something like this. Remember your in the jungle at times, you're going to see some freaky bugs, but as the Tonger says 'don't panic it's organic'. For the non swimmers that are worried about the snorkelling - don't be. I can't swim and I did it. It was amazing... my brilliant guide took good care of me. So don't depress your guides and act like a bore, if you're not making the most of your trek, you'll depress your guide. Honest.
Oh and hey, he's a great cook, - you should go for this reason alone if nothing else. Christian Tong, you're a great guide & friend. To all the other guides we met on the trek at Xpuha, Dave, Steve & Fitz... I'm sure you all have your talents but I'm sorry, Christian Tong is the best. (Even if he is paying me to say all this... I'm just messing Tonger ha ha)
The best advise that I can give if you get to travel anywhere with Tonger, listen to everything he tells you. This guy knows his stuff!!
Tonger, I'll be expecting my cheque in the post!! Ha ha.
