FEATURED LOCATION - MONUMENT VALLEY
Monument Valley is one of the most photographed locations on the planet. And any 1st time visitor to this area can understand why.
Located along the Arizona/Utah border, this Navajo Tribal Park was first brought to the attention of a world wide audience in 1938, when John Ford and John Wayne teamed up to create the movie "Stagecoach".
Since then, the magnificent sandstone monoliths, massive red rock cliffs, buttes, mesas and spires have become the subject of many movies, television advertisements, and artistic photographs.
More than a mere "park", this special place is the spiritual homeland to the Native American Navajo tribe who continue to live in the valley today while preserving their culture, religion, language and most importantly their philosophy of living in harmony with the land.
Many people decide to explore Monument Valley on a walking tour or 4 X 4 jeep tour conducted by a Navajo guide.
This undoubtedly provides for a richer and more complete experience and provides the
guests with an insider's perspective regarding the Navajo experience.
FROM A TOUR LEADERS PERSPECTIVE
My favourite aspect of Monument Valley is the location of our campsite. Perched upon a ledge above the valley floor, we are afforded with expansive views of this magnificent landscape. Due to the fact that there are very few services in close proximity to the valley, we usually have this place all to ourselves.
Following perhaps the most beautiful sunsets in the world, the peaceful evenings are filled with discussions around a warm campfire; stargazing up at the desert sky, and the howling of coyotes in the distance.
It is the morning, however, where the most incredible natural spectacle occurs. The sun rises from behind the giant sandstone monuments, creating a silhouette, which gradually becomes more defined as the sky brightens.
Meanwhile the rest of the sky transforms into a variety of different shades of pink, orange, maroon, and purple. The best part of all of this is that you don't even have to leave the comfort of your warm sleeping bag to witness it. Just unzip your tent!
